How does laser hair removal work?
Previously, electrolysis was the only method of reasonably eliminating unwanted body and facial hair. Its greatest disadvantage was that electrolysis worked by inserting a needle into each individual hair follicle, one at a time. An electric shock was administered to burn each follicle and retard hair growth. The process was long, tedious and painful with varying results.
Laser hair removal uses laser light energy which passes through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. The laser light scans the area being treated and disables a large number of the treated follicles almost immediately. Since the hair grows in cycles, 3 to 4 treatments are recommended to remove all of the hair growth. Laser hair removal is appropriate for all parts of the body and all skin types.
Some patients may feel a slight discomfort during the procedure; Dr. Sheila Bond will prescribe a lidocaine-based numbing cream to apply before your treatment.
